I got the ‘cheap’ Mac Mini and its Awesome!

So, I recently got my hands on the new M2 Mac Mini. I went for the base model as I don’t need to do any crazy video editing or anything like that and I wanted to share my thoughts on it with you. Here are some pros and cons that I’ve found so far:

Here are some pros and cons that I’ve found so far:

Pros:

  • Speed: The M2 chip is incredibly fast, and everything on the Mac Mini runs smoothly and quickly. I’ve noticed a significant improvement in performance compared to my old computer.
  • Power Efficiency: The M2 chip is incredibly power-efficient, meaning that the Mac Mini doesn’t get as hot as my old computer did and doesn’t make as much noise.
  • Compatibility: The M2 Mac Mini is compatible with a wide range of software and devices, so I haven’t had any issues getting everything set up and running smoothly.
  • Compact Size: The Mac Mini is incredibly compact, which makes it great for small spaces. I don’t have a lot of room on my desk, so the Mac Mini fits perfectly.
  • Cost: The M2 Mac Mini is relatively affordable compared to other Apple computers, making it a great choice for someone who wants a powerful machine without breaking the bank.

Cons:

  • Limited Upgradability: The Mac Mini is designed to be compact, so there aren’t many options for upgrading components like RAM or storage. This could be a downside for someone who wants to be able to upgrade their computer over time.
  • Lack of Ports: The M2 Mac Mini only has a few ports, which could be a downside for someone who needs to connect multiple devices to their computer. I’ve had to invest in a few extra dongles to connect all of my peripherals.
  • No Built-In Display: The Mac Mini doesn’t come with a built-in display, so you’ll need to invest in a separate monitor if you don’t already have one. This could be a downside for someone who wants an all-in-one computer.
  • Limited Graphics Performance: While the M2 chip is great for most tasks, it doesn’t offer the same level of graphics performance as some of Apple’s more powerful computers. This could be a downside for someone who wants to do a lot of gaming or graphic design work.

There are ways to get around certain issues, such as access to ports on the back. Not having ports on the front of the unit is aesthetically pleasing but not the most practical, so looking at something like the satechi dock could be an option as it sits perfectly under the Mac Mini.

Overall, I’m really happy with my decision to get the M2 Mac Mini. It’s incredibly fast and efficient and perfect for my needs as a writer and researcher. However, I can see how some of the downsides might be dealbreakers for other people. If you’re considering getting the M2 Mac Mini, make sure to think about what you need in a computer and how the Mac Mini fits into your budget and workflow. If the base model doesn’t meet your requirements, then take a look at the M2 Pro Mac Mini instead!
