AI written blogs – Are they good or bad?

I use Notion to plan my life, keep track of my blog ideas and what stage each of them are at, but recently I came across an icon when I opened a new page that said ‘Ask AI’. This intrigued me as to what it could possibly do. So I followed the onscreen instructions to type spacebar to write something with AI, which brought up a selection box showing me some choices that the AI could do such as, write a blog post, Press release or even an essay.

Notion

As a blogger, I decided to try this out and typed ‘write a blog about the top 5 tech bags of 2023’

It’s strange to watch within a few seconds of pressing Enter, the screen fill with information that related to top tech bags like Peak Design, Gomatic and Neweez. Although it didn’t write about 5 bags, it did write a short summary about 4 of the most well-known (to me) tech bags currently out there, so I also asked it write something on the Koran FlipPack to add to the rest.

The text was limited about each bag but Notion offered options to change how it was written from ‘make it longer’ to ‘simplify the language’. I chose to ‘make it longer’ , which rewrote the text and offered to replace the current text. After some manipulation and adding some pictures a 661 word blog post was created.

There are good and bad points to this type of writing. The good being the speed that it can be created and also no chance on any typos. The bad however is that it takes away the art of writing and doesn’t offer the insightful opinions or experiences of the writer.

My thoughts:

I believe in writing what you are passionate about and opinions. This however, does not come across in AI written text. It is very fact based as you may expect, which can be noticed if you look close enough. Also, there can be some discrepancies in facts used, which is something that people using this should be very careful of.

AI definitely has its place but it may be better positioned in machine learning or the development of technology rather than creative writing.
